Reading about the Great Depression

The Great Depression was a momentous time in American history. Two nonfiction books, We had everything but money and When the banks closed, we opened our hearts, compiled by Reminisce Magazine, feature short, personal accounts by people who experienced the Depression years. Loaded with photographs, these books describe how the Depression affected the average person, and how ingenuity, mutual support, and courage enabled people to deal with economic disaster. These books are a good introduction to the social history of the Depression and the 1930s.

The New York Times has published their top 10 list. Frankly, I haven't read any of them, and only one (The Nine) is on my must-read list. The 100 Notable Books list is more up my speed. I recommend The Reluctant Fundamentalist, Harry Potter (last one!), and the Yiddish Policeman's Union. I have heard good things of On Chesil Beach, The Abstinence Teacher, Bridge of Sighs, and Exit Ghost. If you want to get any one book for you, email us. flref (@) farmingtonlibct (dot) org

Get into the holiday spirit

Monday's storm created a winter wonderdland view from the Adult Services Dept. windows on the second floor. It was enough to get anyone into the holiday spirit. To help that along, the library has a vast collection of holiday related books, DVDs, videos, CDs and magazines. We have holiday cookbooks, holiday traditions and decorations, and books of Christmas music. Some items are on display while others can be found through the catalog or ask one of the Information Services Staff for assistance. Have a happy and safe holiday season!

Vintage Movies

New titles are being added to the library's collection of vintage Hollywood movies. These movies are not only a part of our collective cultural heritage , but also give insight into the times in which they were made. In a sense then, they can be approached from a historical point of view: How did people talk in the 1920s,1930s or 1940s; what were their homes like; what were their societal values; what in society or material goods has changed or stayed the same? Of course, these films also reflect Hollywood's perspective, but they also reflect, in many cases, the experiences of the creative talents who contributed to their making. To be sure, the movies can be enjoyed for their story lines or for the wonderful stars who brought them to life, but they can also be enjoyed for allowing the viewer to revisit a time in history that is long past.

Next Week's Indie Film is "Cinema, Aspirins & Vultures

Next week's indie film is "Cinema, Aspirins & Vultures." It takes place in Brazil, in the remote desert-looking areas, with a young German fellow selling the new drug aspirin. He meets up with a Brazilian guy and they take a road trip. However, Johann gets his draft notice...what to do? In Portuguese with a little German. It's an interesting film, low-key. Come to a showing and add your comments to the blog. See you on Monday at 2 or 7 pm.
