The Tiger's Wife shifts back and forth between the contemporary life of the narrator, a young female doctor, and the tales of her recently deceased grandfather, which are steeped in the magical realism of Marquez, Borges and Calvino. It's these magical tales that define this book. They (and the narrators deep loss for her grandfather provide poignant allegories for the sad and broken state of the former Yugoslavia.
